MLK and Racial Integration
Today, racial integration is the desired societal norm— as it should be. But when Martin Luther King gave his famous “I Have A Dream” speech, that was not the case. King’s call for racial integration was a call for very substantial societal change. This point — as my friend and graduate school advisor, historian Bruce Schulman rightly points out — is frequently lost in public discussions of King’s “I Have a Dream” speech.
