History matters

The muddleheaded view that history is irrelevant, or practically useless, is all too prevalent. Historian Annette Gordon-Reed mounts a powerful case for why history matters, especially for understanding race relations in the United States. In a healthier and a less anti-intellectual culture, the statement “history matters” would be boringly obvious to nearly everyone.
